Record a Zoom Meeting on Your Mac, During the Call

You record a Zoom meeting on Mac during the call in two different ways, and they should not be collapsed into one. Zoom’s Record button writes Zoom’s own file, on this computer or in the cloud, and Zoom’s banner tells the room. A menu-bar app records the microphone and the sound coming out of the speakers while the call runs, and Zoom does not treat that as its recorder. This page is the during-the-call path. If you already finished the meeting and you are looking for Documents/Zoom and an audio_only.m4a Zoom saved itself, use transcribe a local Zoom recording instead.

This is not legal advice. Say that you are recording before you start.

What Zoom records during the call

Zoom distinguishes between recording on this Mac and recording to the cloud. Both are Zoom’s own recorder, not a menu-bar app. Which option you see depends on the host’s account type and the meeting settings.

If you are the host or a co-host, Zoom shows Record. “Record on this computer” writes a local file. “Record to the cloud” writes to Zoom’s cloud, and a cloud transcript is part of that cloud feature set, not of the free local file. Local recording is audio and video that Zoom saved. It is not a text transcript by itself. The folder Zoom uses, and how to transcribe the local audio afterward, is the other article linked above. Do not hunt for that folder while the call is still open.

Zoom’s recording indicator follows Zoom’s recorder. It does not follow every app on the Mac that can hear the speakers. If you only start a third-party capture, the banner stays off. Say out loud that you are recording. Missing Zoom’s banner is not a reason to skip consent.

If your Zoom account does not show Record, the host has not given you the right, or the account type does not include recording. You cannot grant that to yourself as a guest. You can still capture system audio on the Mac, and you still have to tell the room.

  • Host RecordPolicy

Hosts and co-hosts set who may record. Guests follow those settings.

  • Local fileAfter stop

Zoom finishes writing when you end recording. Open Finder paths only after the call.

  • CloudSeparate

Cloud transcript belongs to Zoom cloud recording, not to every local M4A.

  • Menu barNo bot

System audio plus mic, with no new name on the participant list.

Record a Zoom meeting on Mac from the menu bar

Vemoir sits in the menu bar. Before the first call, macOS asks for the microphone and for Screen Recording. Those two permissions are the capture: your voice on one local track, Zoom’s playback on another. There is no screen movie in this path, and no bot joins the Zoom participant list. See capture and models.

Start the capture when the conversation should be kept, not when you remember ten minutes later. You stop it from the same menu. The app does not detect the meeting for you and it does not announce itself in the Zoom chat.

After models are installed, transcription and speaker separation run on the Mac. Minutes, decisions, and tasks are written locally unless you choose, with your own key, to send only the text step to OpenAI or Anthropic. Parakeet v3 covers 25 European languages. Swiss German is not a dialect output you should expect.

As of September 2026 the Mac App Store price is CHF 20 in Switzerland, €24.99 in Germany, Austria, France, and Italy, and $22.99 in the United States. One purchase, no per-meeting fee (pricing). You need Apple silicon, macOS Sonoma 14.2 or later, 8 GB of memory, and 10 GB free. Long meetings are more reliable with 16 GB.

  1. Say you are recording

Zoom’s banner appears only for Zoom’s recorder. Announce a menu-bar capture at the start.

  2. Allow audio

System Settings, Privacy and Security: Screen Recording and Microphone for the app.

  3. Record from the menu bar

Join Zoom with sound on the Mac. Start and stop in Vemoir. Headphones reduce echo.

  4. Export or transcribe

Review on the Mac, or use Zoom’s local file with the after-the-call guide linked above.

If you also press Zoom’s Record, you will have two files. For a normal meeting, pick one record so nobody has to decide later which transcript is official.

Want text without hunting Zoom folders mid-call? Vemoir records the live meeting from the menu bar.

When Zoom’s own recorder is the better choice

Use Zoom’s Record when IT expects the cloud or local file Zoom writes, when the host already turned on cloud transcript for the org, or when your customer policy names Zoom as the system of record. That path keeps video when you need screen content, not audio only.

A menu-bar capture fits when you are not allowed to press Record, when you want audio on the Mac without a bot, or when you need minutes during the call. Compare record a Google Meet on Mac and record a Teams meeting on Mac for the next tool in the stack.

After the call: a short file versus the whole meeting

When the meeting is over and you only have a short clip, the browser tool transcribe a Zoom recording turns that file into text without uploading it. Limits: 15 minutes, 3 successful runs a week, MP3, M4A, WAV, or MP4, no speaker labels. A one-hour Zoom call does not fit that tool. Longer recordings import into the Mac app as MP3, M4A, WAV, AIFF, CAF, or FLAC once you have stopped recording. The during-the-call Mac app is the path for the whole meeting.

If Zoom already wrote audio_only.m4a because you used Record on this computer, follow transcribe a local Zoom recording for the Finder path. Use this article when the decision is still in front of you, before Record or the menu bar.

Typed notes during the call can be folded into the Mac record. Sharing uses the macOS share sheet. There is no team workspace and no CRM export.

What this path does not do

It does not replace Zoom cloud transcript for a company that has standardized on Zoom cloud and is allowed to use it. It does not make the recording lawful: you tell participants, and the app does not claim a certified transcript. Speaker labels in the 15-minute browser tool are not available; speaker separation is on the Mac after you stop. It does not run on a Windows laptop.

If you want to avoid Otter, Fireflies, or another bot in the participant list, the menu bar remains an option, as long as you announce the recording yourself. A bot and a local capture do not answer the same policy question. They only change who appears in the list and where the file lands.

Frequently asked questions

Can I record a Zoom meeting on Mac if I am not the host?

Zoom’s Record button follows the host’s settings. A menu-bar capture of system audio does not need that button. You still need permission from the people in the call.

Will attendees see a recording banner?

They see Zoom’s banner if the host uses Zoom’s recorder. They do not see that banner only because a Mac app is listening to system audio. Tell them yourself.

Is this the same as transcribing Zoom’s local file later?

No. That workflow starts when Zoom has already written the file. This workflow is while the call is running.

Does the browser tool upload the Zoom file?

No. Transcribe a Zoom recording keeps the file in the tab, up to 15 minutes, with 3 successful runs a week and no speaker names.

What does the Mac app cost?

CHF 20 in Switzerland, €24.99 in Germany, Austria, France, and Italy, $22.99 in the United States, as a one-time Mac App Store purchase (September 2026).

Can I record the call and use Zoom cloud too?

Yes, you will have two recordings. Pick the one that matches the rule you already told the room about.

Does Vemoir join Zoom as a participant?

No. It records locally. The roster does not change.

Before your first real call, allow the two permissions in advance, so macOS does not interrupt the meeting with a prompt mid-consent.

For a short file after the call, open transcribe a Zoom recording. For the next live Zoom meeting on Apple silicon, start the menu-bar capture before the discussion you need to keep, and say so when people join.
