Record a Google Meet Live on Your Mac During the Call
To record a Google Meet on Mac while the call runs, you either use Meet’s own recorder, which Google limits by Workspace edition and stores in Drive, or you capture audio on the Mac from the menu bar. The second path does not use Google’s record button and does not add a bot to the Meet. This page is for the call that is open now. It is not a tour of every Workspace SKU.
This is not legal advice. If a client contract names only Google’s cloud copy, treat that contract as the rule.
What Google Meet records, and who can start it
Google’s recording belongs to the account that owns the meeting and to the Workspace edition on that account. On plans where recording is included, someone with permission, often the organizer, starts it from Meet controls. The file lands in the organizer’s Google Drive, usually in a Meet Recordings folder, and a link appears in chat. People outside that organization do not automatically get a copy on disk.
Consumer Gmail and many entry Workspace plans do not show the control at all. You can still hear the meeting on a Mac. Hearing it is not the same as Google’s Drive file.
Meet announces its own recording inside the meeting. That notice is for Google’s recorder. It does not cover a separate app on your computer.
- Who startsOrganizer
Often the host or someone Google allows on that tenant. Guests cannot turn on Google’s recorder for the whole room.
- Where it landsDrive
On the organizer’s account when recording is allowed, not on every participant’s Mac.
- BrowserAny
Chrome, Safari, or another browser works for audio as long as the tab plays sound.
- Local captureNo bot
A menu-bar app hears system audio. The participant list does not gain a tile.
Confirm editions, roles, and control labels in Google’s Meet recording help before you promise a customer a button exists on their tenant. Checked as a public help URL in September 2026.
Record a Google Meet on Mac from the menu bar
Open the Meet in the browser you already use. The tab must play audio. Vemoir records from the menu bar: microphone on one local track, system audio on another. You start when the discussion should be kept, and you stop when it should not. The app does not join the Meet as a participant and does not require a Workspace edition.
macOS asks for Microphone and Screen Recording the first time. Screen Recording is how the system lets an app capture other apps’ audio. You are not saving the Meet window as video. See capture and models.
When models are on the Mac, transcription and speaker separation run there. Notes, decisions, and tasks stay on the machine unless you explicitly send only the text step to OpenAI or Anthropic with your own key. After models are installed, the workflow can run offline. Setup and model downloads still need the network once.
Parakeet v3 covers 25 European languages. Other installed models have their own lists. Menu language does not pick transcript language. Do not expect Swiss German dialect as a separate written form. A glossary helps with names and product terms.
As of September 2026 the Mac App Store price is CHF 20 in Switzerland, €24.99 in Germany, Austria, France, and Italy, and $22.99 in the United States. One purchase, no per-meeting charge (pricing). Requirements: Apple silicon (M1 or later), macOS Sonoma 14.2 or later, 8 GB of memory, 10 GB free. Use 16 GB for long meetings. No Intel Mac, no Windows, no iPhone or iPad.
Say you are recording
Google’s banner appears only when Google records. Announce a menu-bar capture at the start.
Allow audio
In System Settings, Privacy and Security: Microphone and Screen Recording for the app.
Record from the menu bar
Join Meet with sound on the Mac. Start and stop in Vemoir. Headphones reduce echo.
Export what you need
Review the record on the Mac. Share only the sections others should see (exports).
If the organizer also records to Drive, you may have two copies. Tell the room which one is the record you will keep.
Want minutes without waiting for a Drive link? Vemoir records the next Meet from the menu bar.
When Google’s Meet recorder is the better choice
Stay on Google’s recorder when the customer requires the official cloud file, when IT already indexes Meet Recordings in Drive, or when everyone in the org must see the same link in chat. Google’s path also keeps video when your policy expects a screen capture, not audio only.
A menu-bar capture fits when you are a guest without record rights, when your edition has no record button, when the audio should stay on the Mac, or when you want a transcript and minutes without inviting a notetaker bot. Compare record a Teams meeting on Mac and record a Zoom meeting on Mac when the next call uses another app.
When the call is over and you only have a file
A file you exported, downloaded from Drive, or saved another way can go to recording to notes if it is short. The tool runs in the browser after the call. The file is not uploaded. The model downloads once, then later runs can work offline, which you can check in the Network tab. Limits: 15 minutes, 3 successful runs a week, MP3, M4A, WAV, or MP4, and no speaker labels. A full Meet does not fit. Menu-bar capture during the call covers the whole conversation, with speakers separated on the Mac.
This is not Zoom’s local audio_only.m4a path. A Meet file from Drive is whatever Google put in the organizer’s account. If you never started Google’s recorder, that Drive folder stays empty even when your Mac has a full audio file.
Typed notes from the meeting can be folded into the Mac record. Sharing uses the macOS share sheet. There is no shared team workspace in the app and no CRM export.
What to say in the Meet
Google’s recording notice appears only when Google is recording. A local capture does not trigger it. Say at the start that you are recording audio on your Mac and that no extra notetaker has joined. If someone says no, stop the menu bar. “There is no bot in the participant list” is true and incomplete. The recording can still run on the host’s computer.
If the customer contract allows only the Workspace recording in their Drive, do not add a personal copy. Two lawful notices are still two files, and the second one has its own retention.
Frequently asked questions
Can I record a Google Meet on Mac without a Workspace plan?
Google’s recorder may be missing on your edition. A menu-bar capture of system audio does not use that control and does not store the file in Drive. You still need the other people to agree. Check Google’s help for which editions include Meet recording (September 2026).
Does the Mac app join the Meet as a bot?
No. It records microphone and system audio locally. The participant list does not gain a tile. You announce the recording yourself.
Where does Google put its own recording?
In the organizer’s Drive when that account is allowed to record, with a link in the chat. Guests do not get a local copy just by being in the call. Confirm the folder name on Google’s current help if you are writing an internal runbook.
Will the browser turn a Meet file into notes?
Yes, if the file is MP3, M4A, WAV, or MP4, at most 15 minutes, and you stay inside 3 successful runs a week. Recording to notes does not upload the file and does not label speakers.
What does the app cost?
CHF 20 in Switzerland, €24.99 in Germany, Austria, France, and Italy, $22.99 in the United States, once, on the Mac App Store (September 2026). The App Store shows the price for your storefront.
Does this capture the Meet window?
No. Screen Recording permission here is for system audio, not a screen movie. If you need slides as video, use Google’s recorder or a separate screen tool.
Can I use Chrome and Safari the same way?
Yes, as long as the Meet tab plays audio on the Mac. Permissions are per app, so allow the browser you use for calls.
Start the menu-bar recording on the next Meet you are allowed to keep, or open recording to notes for a short file you already exported.
