Granola Alternative: 7 Meeting Note Tools Compared (2026)

A Granola alternative helps when you like Granola’s no-bot, live note-taking feel, but you want different data handling, different pricing, or a Mac-first workflow where meeting audio stays on your device. Granola listens through your computer’s microphone and system audio, builds an AI notepad tied to your calendar, and does not put a visible notetaker in the participant list. The tools below give up some of that cloud convenience in return for local capture, team bots, or file-based transcription after the call.

This guide compares seven options as of October 2026. Plan limits and prices change, so follow the linked vendor pages before you standardize on a tool.

Contents

What Granola does well

Granola is an AI meeting notepad for desktop and mobile. You start it manually for a call, and it does not auto-join as a meeting guest. On desktop it captures microphone and meeting audio from your computer, transcribes through third-party speech providers, and summarizes with third-party AI models (Granola security, checked October 2026). Granola states that it does not store meeting audio. It keeps transcripts and your notes in encrypted cloud infrastructure on AWS in the US.

That combination is appealing when client policies forbid a bot in the roster but you still want live notes during Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or similar apps. Granola also ships mobile apps for in-person conversations and syncs with your calendar to detect upcoming meetings (Granola homepage, checked October 2026).

Granola pricing as of October 2026

Granola’s pricing page, checked in October 2026, lists Basic at $0 per user per month, Business at $14, and Enterprise at $35. Basic meeting history is 30 days. Business and Enterprise show unlimited history. Bot-free device-audio capture is listed on every plan, as are desktop, iOS, Android and Apple Watch apps. “Audio deleted after transcription” is listed as included. Notes are private until you share them.

The security page adds product detail. You start Granola manually, it does not auto-join, and it does not add a bot. Desktop works with any meeting platform. Mobile is aimed at in-person meetings and transcribes after the meeting from temporarily cached audio. Transcription uses providers such as Deepgram and Assembly. Summaries use providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Granola says it does not allow those providers to train on your data. Granola itself trains on anonymized data unless you opt out in Settings. Enterprise has training turned off by default. Notes live in a US-hosted AWS environment, encrypted at rest and in transit.

  • AudioNot stored

Security page: Granola does not store the audio. Transcripts and your notes remain.

  • History30 days

On Basic, per the pricing page in October 2026.

  • TrainingOpt-out

Granola trains on anonymized data unless you disable it. Enterprise default is off.

How to choose a Granola alternative

Three questions decide it.

  1. Must the file stay on your Mac? Granola sends audio to transcription providers to produce text. Local apps keep recordings and transcripts on the device unless you export or enable cloud AI with your own key.
  2. Do you need live notes during the call? Live capture is different from transcribing a file after the meeting. The free transcribe recording tool is an after-the-call trial in the browser, with no upload. It does not listen live like Granola on desktop.
  3. Can a bot join the call? If yes, Otter or Fireflies may be simpler for a shared team library. If no, see meeting notes without a bot.

Stay on Granola

  • You want a light notepad on Mac and Windows, plus mobile for in-person notes
  • No bot in the roster is the hard rule, and US-hosted transcripts are acceptable
  • The 30-day history on Basic is enough, or you are on Business or Enterprise

Leave Granola

  • You need the audio file after the call, not just the transcript
  • You need offline capture once models are on the Mac
  • You want to avoid cloud transcription entirely, not only long-term audio storage

For the next live meeting on Apple silicon, the Vemoir Mac app records system audio and your microphone from the menu bar (how capture works). For a wider shortlist that includes bots and team tools, see the best meeting notes app for Mac comparison.

Seven Granola alternatives

Vemoir (Mac app)

Best for: keeping the recording, the transcript and the minutes on the Mac, with no bot in the call.

Vemoir records the microphone and system audio from the menu bar. You start and stop each session. Transcription and summaries run on the Mac with local models. A cloud model is opt-in, with your own API key. The record is minutes, decisions, action items and a follow-up draft. Speaker separation runs on the Mac (the record, Ask Vemoir).

It works with any app that plays audio on the Mac (platforms). macOS only allows another app’s audio through the Screen Recording permission. Vemoir uses that permission for meeting audio and does not record the screen.

Price, as of October 2026: a one-time Mac App Store purchase. CHF 20 in Switzerland, €24.99 in Germany, Austria, France and Italy, $22.99 in the US (pricing). It needs Apple silicon, macOS Sonoma 14.2 or later, 8 GB of memory and 10 GB of free storage. 16 GB or more is recommended for long meetings.

Skip Vemoir if you need Windows, an Intel Mac, or a shared cloud library with CRM fields.

Otter.ai

Best for: teams that accept a calendar notetaker bot and want mobile apps plus shared workspaces.

Otter joins Zoom, Teams and Meet from the calendar. The desktop app can record without a notetaker in the room, per Otter’s help, but the transcript still goes to Otter’s cloud (Otter pricing, recording permissions, October 2026).

Skip Otter if the issue is cloud storage, not the visible bot.

Fireflies.ai

Best for: conversation intelligence, CRM workflows and a mature cloud library when a bot or Chrome extension is allowed.

Fireflies stores recordings and transcripts in its workspace, sells per-seat plans, and documents a Chrome extension that records without the bot in the roster (Fireflies pricing, security, October 2026). The pricing FAQ says there are no monthly rate limits on the bot or extension for Pro and Business users. The API, dialers and bulk uploads have their own limits.

Skip Fireflies if bots and extensions are blocked equally, or if audio must not sit in a vendor cloud.

Fathom

Best for: generous free recording, clips, and optional bot-free beta capture on Mac.

fathom.ai/pricing, October 2026: the free plan has unlimited recordings and transcriptions, with bot or bot-free capture (beta, Mac only). Paid plans are Premium at $20 or $16, Team at $19 or $15, and Business at $34 or $25 per user per month, with the lower figure on annual billing. Business adds CRM sync.

Skip Fathom if audio must stay on the Mac or you need bot-free capture on Windows.

MacWhisper

Best for: local transcription and optional cloud AI via your own keys.

MacWhisper records online meetings without a bot and transcribes locally. The site lists Pro at €64 once, with lifetime updates, as of October 2026. Summaries can use connected cloud AI or local models through Ollama or LM Studio.

Skip MacWhisper if you need a team cloud workspace or Windows.

tl;dv

Best for: EU-hosted cloud libraries with CRM integrations.

tl;dv pricing and features, October 2026: EU storage, no training on recordings per the vendor, and transcription in 30+ languages. Pro is €29 per seat per month, or €18 on annual billing.

Skip tl;dv if an EU cloud is still too far, or you need offline capture.

Jamie

Best for: no bot, EU processing, and audio deleted after transcription.

meetjamie.ai and pricing, October 2026: processing in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, with ISO 27001 stated on the homepage. Plus is €21, Pro €39 and Team €33 per user per month, billed annually.

Skip Jamie if you need the audio file after the call or a fully offline meeting.

If you already have a short audio export and only need text locally in the tab, try the free transcribe recording tool. It is not a live Granola replacement. Compare it with live capture on platform support.

Where Granola is still the better choice

Granola remains a strong default when you want a lightweight notepad experience, no bot in the participant list, and live transcription on both Mac and Windows with mobile capture for in-person meetings. If you already rely on Granola’s calendar flow and shared notes, switching purely for privacy may cost more convenience than you gain.

Granola also documents SOC 2 Type 2, a commitment to GDPR compliance, enterprise model-training defaults and clear statements about third-party AI providers (Granola security, checked October 2026). Teams that accept US-hosted notes and cloud transcription may prefer Granola’s product polish over rebuilding a workflow on a local app.

If your buyers only asked for no bot in the roster, Granola already answers that. A Granola alternative search usually points to the next question: where the transcript lives, whether you keep audio, offline capture, or subscription math. Name which of those blocked approval before you replace a workflow that already works.

Honest limits to plan for

No tool on this page makes a recording lawful. You tell people, you keep what you can justify, and you delete the rest. This is not legal advice.

Granola depends on network access during capture and on third-party transcription providers, even though it does not store raw audio. The Basic plan keeps only 30 days of meeting history on the pricing page we saw in October 2026. Export or upgrade before you lose context.

Local apps need disk space and model downloads. Vemoir needs Apple silicon and Screen Recording permission for system audio. It does not record the screen contents (capture details). It does not replace Granola on Windows or phone for live capture.

For structured minutes rather than a raw transcript alone, see the record view.

Before you shortlist tools, export one week of Granola notes and list which fields your CRM or wiki still needs filled in by hand. That gap tells you whether you need Fireflies-style intelligence, Mac-local files, or only a cheaper seat.

Want live capture without sending audio through Granola’s cloud stack? Vemoir records from the Mac menu bar. The App Store listing is the purchase, and pricing shows the figure for your storefront.

Frequently asked questions

What is the closest Granola alternative without cloud transcription?

Vemoir and MacWhisper default to on-Mac transcription for live or imported audio. Jamie advertises EU-hosted processing without a bot. Granola itself sends audio to transcription providers to produce text, per its security page.

Is there a free Granola alternative?

Granola, Otter, Fireflies, Fathom and tl;dv offer free tiers with different limits. MacWhisper has a free Mac tier. Vemoir sells a one-time Mac app for live capture. /tools/transcribe-recording is a free after-the-call browser trial, not live desktop capture like Granola.

Can Vemoir replace Granola’s live notes during a call?

On the Mac, Vemoir records live system audio and your microphone and generates minutes, decisions, action items and a follow-up draft locally (the record). The browser tool only transcribes a file you already have after the call. It does not listen live like Granola on desktop.

Does Granola store my meeting recordings?

Granola’s security page states it does not store the audio from meetings. It keeps transcripts and your notes in encrypted cloud storage (Granola security, October 2026). Verify the current wording before a client audit.

How does pricing compare to Granola?

Granola publishes free and paid tiers on its site (October 2026). Vemoir is a one-time Mac App Store purchase. Otter, Fireflies, Fathom, tl;dv and Jamie use subscription seat models. MacWhisper Pro is a one-time license on the vendor site.

Can I use a Granola alternative offline?

Vemoir and MacWhisper support offline workflows once local models are installed. Granola and most cloud notetakers need network access during capture.

Do these tools train AI on my meetings?

Granola documents anonymized training with an opt-out, and enterprise defaults with training off (Granola security, October 2026). Read each vendor’s privacy page, because policies differ.

Which Granola alternative is best for Swiss or EU teams?

Jamie emphasizes EU residency on its site. tl;dv describes EU hosting and GDPR-oriented controls. Local Mac processing with Vemoir or MacWhisper keeps files on the device unless you export or enable cloud AI. Pick based on your threat model, not on marketing labels alone.

Can I import a Granola export into another tool?

Most alternatives accept common audio formats within plan limits. Vemoir imports MP3, M4A, WAV, AIFF, CAF and FLAC on the Mac. Check each vendor’s import caps.

No. Read each vendor’s privacy and security documentation, align with your organization’s policies, and decide retention and sharing rules yourself.

If local capture fits your next client call, start with how Vemoir works or try the App Store listing.
